Workshop DIG Darmstadt 5-6 June 04

Deutsch-Indische Gesellschaft Darmstadt e.V. (5--6 June 2004)

This workshop by Ludwig Pesch is taught in German and English. It focuses on the actual process of music making with the help of one's voice, a tambura, cymbals, solfa and rhythmic syllables. On the basis of such hands-on experience, further insights are given as to the cultural context and teaching methods of Carnatic music.
Participants are therefore encouraged to get immersed in music making from the very start, irrespective of prior exposure to this music system. In this manner, a rich tapestry of ideas and associations is explored in a direct and unconventional manner.

The workshop aims at building bridges between the vocabulary of an ancient yet sophisticated culture, and modern artistic expressions such as encountered in the context of World Music.

About the subjects covered in the workshop

This workshop can also be adapted to suit the special interest, abilities and needs of our participants:

  • amateur musicians
  • professional musicians
  • music teachers
  • young children and school classes
  • special education and rehabilitation programmes for the physically handicapped
  • patients undergoing psychotherapy (references on request)
  • rehabilitation programmes for former drug and alcohol addicts
  • Total immersion programmes for musicians and social workers

The workshop is about experiencing a special way of making music together with others. Whatever your background may be, participate

  • for the sheer delight of making music yourself
  • in order to explore new and fascinating musical horizons
  • for making contact with another culture in a personal manner
  • without having to handle any complicated musical instrument

An infinite variety of artful melodic and rhythmic patterns is the key to widening our musical and cultural horizon in a playful manner.
